Did you know that avocado toast is one of the decade’s most popular food trends? It’s so beloved that it currently has over 1.2 million posts under the hashtag #avocadotoast. It’s healthy yet ever-so-slightly indulgent. When waking up in the morning, the only way I can imagine starting the day is with a nice piece of toast with sliced avocado on it, maybe with some lemon juice or chili flakes for good measure. This basic breakfast has become an obligatory menu item at most destinations in town.
The craving for avocado toast is just a fact of life at this point, but we’re so saturated with restaurant options that it can be hard to decide where to go. No matter how many times it's snapped and shared, it will never go out of style as far as our stomachs are concerned. With so many new and emerging ways to dress up your bread, it's impossible to ever grow tired of gobbling it down. Is your mouth watering yet? Never fear, here is a brief list of my very favorite toast locations in Spokane to find your own toast of your dreams.
The Grain Shed opened its doors in 2018 in the Perry District and has since gained a reputation for excellent house-made breads, pastries, breakfast food, and sandwiches. If I had to choose just one location, this would be it! All breads made with stone-milled flour and cultured wheat. My two favorite here is avocado toast with schug and brie cheese with radish and habanero jam. Pair that with their Doma coffee for a much-needed boost in the morning.
Pathfinder Café Is a unique coffee shop located on the South Hill connected to a bike shop serving all the healthiest treats in town. Their menu is so refreshing, flavorful and filling. Their delightfully minimal avocado toast is no exception served with your choice of mayo (regular or vegan), sliced egg and sprinkled red pepper flakes on artisan bread made locally by Glorious Bakery. While you are here try their super-food lattes. I highly recommend the turmeric golden latte.
Hand-crafted, delicious and Instagram approved? Ladder Coffee and Toast Is where you need to be downtown. Their avocado toast is topped with cherry tomatoes, sriracha aioli for a funky twist. Don’t forget to top it with a fried egg to go full-on decadent. All of this piled on daily fresh baked bread that is out of this world? Yes, please.
The Indaba Coffee and Toast serves up some of the most creative toast in the city. Chef created masterpieces are available every day ranging from savory to sweet. Go for the bacon, avocado, radish, cilantro and garlic mayo toast for a savory option or for the sweet tooth, try their seasonal fruit toast served with honey sweetened ricotta. The helpful and friendly staff is an added bonus.
No list would be complete without a mention of Vault Coffee located in Coeur d’Alene Idaho. This location is a must - it’s like going to toast heaven. They serve five artisan options. My go-to is the avocado toast with hard-boiled egg. Find them on your way to the lake for the perfect breakfast to fuel your day on the water.
